Promotion of Children's Clubs

Creating a conducive atmosphere for all children between the ages of 8 and 16, basically from families in difficult and dire circumstances and to provide a forum for child to child participations in relaxed and friendly surrounds, to play, to develop individual potentials and skill in games and arts, studies at schools and vocational training centers, discussions and debates on child-centered activities, exhibiting their talents and abilities in various fields. Fostering the sprit of thrift and savings of rational thinking, of self esteem and of integrity, the sense of cohesiveness with ethnic cultures of spirituality and of humour – in short promoting the children’s in-built strengths of resilience. These help children in developing mutual respect, tolerance and a sense of belonging in the community.

The Police Department in Madurai have several "Police Boys Clubs". The administration of one of their clubs, in Alwarpuram, has been entrusted to the Nanban since 1995 as a goodwill gesture for Nanban's field work and in the best interest of the community children.

The Kalasam Self Help Groups have founded some Children's Associations in the different slum areas of Madurai. The community SHG mothers in the respective areas are responsible for these associations. Local voluntary youth welfare groups also assist these associations. Many of the activities here are guided by Nanban personnel. The member children enjoy similar facilities as obtained in the Nanban-administered Police Children's club at Alwarpuram.

Children’s Mega Panchayat

By enabling children's voices to be heard and supporting children's growth, we aim to support the development of independent and independently-thinking citizens who believe that they can affect the society around them. Our activities endeavour to provide as many children as possible with the opportunity to experience co-operative participation and influence, as well as to enhance children's democracy and lobbying skills.

The Children’s Mega Panchayat introduces children to a world of ideas, creating opportunities for reflection and critical thinking as a part of mainstream society. Through participation children make their contribution by become active and engaged contributors. The elected members come together for a mega children’s panchayat once a year and explore the right to their participation.
